SJ Roth Writers Statement The decision for S.J. to be a funny playwright was made for him. His life was a screwball comedy from the beginning. S.J.'s birth certificate reads Father: Writer. Mother: Artist. S.J.'s father frequently took him out elementary school to see Charlie Chaplin movies in revival movie houses which planted the seeds for S.J.'s passion for comedy. S.J.'s mother, the founder of a prestigious etching atelier who worked with diverse and groundbreaking artists, transformed their Victorian home, the birthplace and home of Joseph Cornell, one of America's most innovative artists, into a home for creative strays. At one point during S.J.'s youth, a costume designer, a composer, and landscape painter, all in need of temporary housing, were living in his home. As each artist plied his craft, doors opened and closed in a speed reserved for farce, S.J. knew never knew who would be spending the night or who would be at any given meal. The display, the making and most importantly, the spirit of art was everywhere. After the birth of his first child and a play of his was produced in the Bronx, S.J. moved to Los Angeles, where still inspired by Chaplin and the rich, creative spirit of the home in which he lived, writes screenplays and plays that blend comedy, romance, action and drama.
